DESCRIPTION:Co-author: Allen Tesdall (CUNY) \n\nWe study the diffraction o
 f a weak\, self-similar shock in two space dimensions near a point where i
ts shock strength approaches zero and the shock turns continuously into an
expansion wavefront. For example\, this happened when a weak shock hits a
semi-infinite screen. The local asymptotic solution satisfies the unstead
y transonic small disturbance equation. We also consider a related half-sp
ace problem where a shock whose strength approaches zero reflects off a ``
soft'' boundary. Numerical solutions show a complex reflection pattern sim
ilar to one that occurs in the Guderley Mach reflection of weak shocks.\n\
