SUMMARY:Structural and functional characterisation of oxide nanomaterials

DESCRIPTION:I will give an overview of recent activities of the Materials
& Condensed Matter Physics group in Glasgow\, with a focus on the characte
risation of technologically-relevant complex oxides. My first exemplar is
the synthesis of manganese oxide nanoparticles as a potential contrast age
nt in medical MRI scanners\; these particles are of interest because their
unusual 'octapod' shape imbues them with unexpectedly pronounced ferromag
netism\, even though bulk MnO is know to be a bulk antiferromagnet. My sec
ond exemplar will be to describe our efforts in developing oxide materials
for data storage applications. I will cover aspects of thin-film growth v
ia pulsed laser deposition\; electrical characterisation of nanopatterned
devices\; and on-going developments in the characterisation of devices usi
ng nanoanalytical and Lorentz electron microscopies.
