DESCRIPTION:Extended field theory uses generalised geometry and an enlarge
d coordinate space to give a manifestly U-duality invariant version of 11-
dimensional supergravity. I will show how for the SL(5) U-duality group re
levant to four dimensions\, the extended field theory contains not just a
truncation of type IIA but also one of type IIB theory on an equal footing
. This truncation is obtained by using an unconventional three-dimensional
section of the extended coordinate space and provides a reason for existe
nce of the extra coordinates. I will also discuss how the M*\, IIA* and II
B* theories arise when a Lorentzian version of extended field theory is us
 ed.
