DESCRIPTION:Blindness caused by photoreceptor death is one of the leading
causes of untreatable sight loss in the developed world. Photoreceptor rep
lacement by transplantation is a promising novel therapeutic strategy and
recent research has yielded evidence for restoration of vision following t
he transplantation of healthy rod photoreceptors in murine models of blind
ness. Moreover\, it is now possible to generate populations of transplanta
ble photoreceptors from embryonic stem cells. Only cells from a particular
stage in development\, post-mitotic photoreceptor precursors\, appear cap
able of migrating from the subretinal space into the recipient neural reti
na. Why and how only these cells migrate represents an important and intri
 guing question.
