DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, the amount of traffic in the Internet has do
ubled annually.\nTo address this rapid demand\, all-optical networks have
gathered interest\nand attention in the \nresearch community. \nIn this ta
lk\, I will give an overview of all-optical network architecture\nand intr
oduce a breakthrough technology from NTT Laboratories called the\nHikari R
outer. \nThe Hikari Router is a GMPLS-based photonic multilayer router con
sisting of\ncost-effective multilayer (IP and optical layers) signaling an
d routing\ntechniques. \nI will also discuss another recent research work
on a cost-effective\nall-optical network architecture for metropolitan are
a network (MAN). \nThis new architecture is a single-hop WDM network based
on central arrayed\nwaveguide grating (AWG) and it has an autonomic colli
sion avoidance\nmechanism in couplers between the AWG and network nodes.\n
\nDr. Noriaki Kamiyama received his M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in Communicatio
 ns\nEngineering from Osaka University\, Japan\, in 1994 and 1996\, respect
ively. \nFrom 1996 to 1997\, he was a visiting researcher at the Universit
 y of\nSouthern California\, USA. \nIn 1997\, he joined NTT Multimedia Netw
orks Laboratories as a research\nscientist.\nHe has been active and engage
d in network research areas focusing on IP\nnetworks\, content-distributio
 n systems\, optical networks\, and Internet\nmeasurement.
