DESCRIPTION:Latest analytical progress in methane ice core studies in term
s of temporal resolution but also in terms of the methane isotopic composi
tion provides new insights into past changes in the global methane cycle.
The use of bipolar (isotopic) methane records allows us to determine the e
missions of different methane source for times of relatively stable enviro
nmental conditions such as the Holocene. For glacial/interglacial changes\
, however\, we found that not only wetland emission strengths are changing
but also the isotopic signatures of the methane sources themselves are al
tered considerably. While this change in source signature allows us to mak
e inferences about previously underestimated ecosystem changes in the past
\, it leaves the methane budget on such long time scale still underconstra
 ined.
