DESCRIPTION:This is a report of work done at Fraser Research (www.fraserre
search.org) over the summer. Fraser Research is at the vanguard of a movem
ent towards clean-slate implementations of the long-haul parts of the inte
rnet\, keeping in mind the convergence of media companies\, mobile network
s and high speed optical fibre infrastructures (Virgin in the UK\, Comcast
in the US). The notion of "reinventing the internet" was unthinkable a fe
w years ago\, but the idea is gaining considerable traction with the peopl
e who make money in the business.\n\nUsing this new physical network as a
substrate\, I worked on logical layer protocols (similar to MPLS) for conn
ection establishment and management\, with special emphasis on large-scale
multicast (100 million subscribers\, say) and mobile clients and servers.
