DESCRIPTION:Astronomy is used as an example of how a science matures over
time. Its history exemplifies the need for a proper heuristic (that gives
advice to theory)\, a theory whose conceptual foundations are clear\, and
a body of data precise enough to test theories. It is argued that the the
ory of intelligence has evolved these three elements over the past 100 yea
rs\,\ndespite being impeded by their lack until recently. The central role
of\nRaven's Progressive Matrices has altered as a consequence: from a tes
t\nheld to be a measure of a fixed intelligence across cultures\, toward a
\ntest highly sensitive to cultural evolution and registering its effects
on\nthe kind of "intelligence" human beings can manifest.\n\nThe talk is o
 pen to everyone. \n
