DESCRIPTION:Optical fibres have been available since the 1970s and are wel
l known for their applications in telecommunications. Less well known are
their abilities to perform measurements and to sense a wide range of physi
cal parameters (sometimes with no electronic sensor equivalent). This talk
will describe the fundamentals of optical fibres and their fabrication\,
and will then go on to review a number of measurement techniques based on
fibre optic sensors\, looking at how they are increasingly being deployed
in a broad range of applications in the Oil & Gas industry.\n\nAndrew Stro
ng is a Physicist (University of Bath\, 1987)\, Chartered Engineer and Fel
low of the IET and has been actively contributing to the design\, developm
ent\, application and international marketing of optical fibre sensors and
systems since 1986. Andrew has thirteen patents granted and pending and i
s author/co-author of 14 papers at presented at international optical and
pipeline conferences. He is a registered UK Expert (IEC SC86C WG2 Fibre Op
tic Sensors) and a Member of BSI Committee GEL/86/3 (Fibre Optic Sensors).
