DESCRIPTION:The search for energy is pushing oil and gas exploration into
deep-water locations requiring the use of floating rigs or drillships. Dri
lling wells in these locations brings particular engineering challenges. C
osts are high\, the environment is harsh\, safety is critical\, and there
are significant technical challenges. The marine drilling riser is the con
nection between the floating rig and the sub-sea well. Appropriate analysi
s can reduce cost and risk. Successful analysis requires an understanding
 of structural mechanics\, fluid-structure interaction\, computational effi
ciency\, and sound engineering judgement. This seminar will use a recently
drilled well as an example to demonstrate how the various strands of succ
 essful analysis come together.
