DESCRIPTION:I'll give an overview of the techniques we have developed in m
y group over the last decade\, as well as applications of these technique
s to investigate various geological problems. I'll discuss more particula
rly progress made in the study of active faults (my core research). I wil
l also discuss applications of our techniques to study geomorphic processe
s such as sand dune migration on Mars.\n\nDr. Jean-Philippe Avouac receive
d his BS in Engineering from Ecole Polytechnique (France) in \n1987 and hi
s PhD in Earth Sciences at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (Fra
nce) in \n1991. He then took a position at the Commissariat à l’Energie
Atomique where he created and \nlead the Laboratoire de Télédétection
et Risque Sismique. Dr Avouac joined the Division of \nGeological and Plan
etary Sciences at Caltech as a full Professor in 2003. Dr. Avouac became t
he \nEarle C. Anthony Professor of Geology in 2012. He was the director of
the Tectonics \nObservatory from 2004 to 2014. He has been elected to the
BP-McKenzie Chair of Earth \nSciences at the university of Cambridge (UK)
in 2014.\nDr. Avouac research aims primarily at a better understanding of
the mechanisms governing \ncrustal deformation\, seismicity and changes t
o the Earth’s surface. He resorts to physical \ndynamic modeling\, geolo
gical observation and geophysical data analysis. He has contributed to \nm
ethod developments in geodesy\, morphotectonics and remote sensing.\nDr. A
vouac has received several awards and honors\, among them: the Humboldt se
nior scientist \nAward of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation\; the Wolf
son award from the Royal Society\;\nthe E. A. Flinn Award of the Internati
onal Lithosphere Program. He is a Fellow of the American \nGeophysical Uni
 on.
