DESCRIPTION:The project "The Evolution of School Mathematics\nDiscourse" d
eveloped a framework for analysing the discourse of GCSE\nexamination ques
tions\, founded in the theoretical assumption that\nmathematical activity
involves engagement in mathematical forms of\ndiscourse and hence that dif
ferences in the discourse in which\nstudents are expected to engage can be
interpreted as differences in\ntheir mathematical activity. Students were
asked to answer questions\nwritten using forms of language found in exami
nations from different\nyears. In this seminar I will present some of the
results of this\ninvestigation\, focusing in particular on student respons
es to\nquestions with different degrees of specialisation.\n
