SUMMARY:Digital Matter: Towards Colloidal Machines - Professor Sharon Glot

DESCRIPTION:Recent advances in the sophistication of nanometer to micron-s
ized colloidal particles and their assemblies make possible the design and
fabrication of functional colloidal elements that perform functions analo
gous to those observed in more traditional self-assembling robots comprise
d of macroscopic\, table-top sized building blocks. These functional coll
oidal elements make possible colloidal memory and colloidal computing\, co
lloidal actuation\, colloidal bionics\, and colloidal compartmentalization
. In this talk\, we present first steps towards the realization of colloi
dal machines via the design and synthesis of colloidal muscles\, digital c
olloidal bits\, bionic colloidal assemblies\, and colloidal swarms.
