SUMMARY:Knots and surfaces - Professor Ivan Smith
DTSTART:20141030T180000Z
DTEND:20141030T190000Z
UID:TALK54655@talks.cam.ac.uk

DESCRIPTION:A knot is an embedding of a circle into three-dimensional spac
 e. The study of knots\, and of the surfaces that they bound\, has surprisi
ng connections to three and four-dimensional topology\, to numerous parts
of algebra\, and even to theoretical physics. The talk will give a brief
introduction first to knots themselves\, and then to some of these wider c
 onnections.
