DESCRIPTION:The two-dimensional Fermi gas with short-range interactions pr
ovides a basic model for understanding pairing and superconductivity in qu
asi-2D materials. The successful realisation of such a model system in col
d-atom experiments could yield further insight into unexplained phenomena
such as the pseudogap regime. I will discuss recent progress towards under
standing the finite-temperature behaviour of the 2D Fermi gas and our inte
rpretation of current quasi-2D experiments on the BCS-BEC crossover [1-3].
