DESCRIPTION:This paper defends a neo-Dennettian view of the psychosemantic
s program\; on the attempt to develop a reductive naturalist theory of men
tal content. It takes the teleosemantic program to be the current\nflagshi
p version of reductive naturalism\, and the paper appeals to recent work o
n human cognitive and social evolution (including my own recent work) to a
rgue that there are fundamental problems in trying to\nextend a teleoseman
tics of animal cognition to human cognition. But it also argues (admittedl
y\, more sketchily) that this should not be seen as a threat to a naturali
stic conception of human cognitive and\ncommunicative life.
