llian Brown\, University of St Andrews

DESCRIPTION:Debates surrounding sex differences in behaviour often focus o
n dichotomies\, such as ‘nature versus nurture’\, ‘sex versus gender
’ and ‘biology versus culture’. In this talk\, I aim to challenge th
ese dichotomous views of sex differences and attempt to provide an integra
tive\, evolutionary perspective that incorporates the roles of socialisati
on and culture. Novel meta-analytic and experimental data will be presente
d on sex differences in mating strategies\, sensation-seeking and conformi
ty. I will argue that developing a more integrated perspective on sex diff
erences in human behaviour and cognition has real-world implications\, for
example in enhancing our understanding of sex differences in susceptibili
 ty to mental health disorders.
