DESCRIPTION:This paper addresses the relationship between local and distri
buted strategies with reference to two recent participatory sound art proj
ects in Belfast and Rio de Janeiro The local concern for site and place is
\ndiscussed and juxtaposed with distributed practices\, which\, by definit
ion question and extend the very notion of site or locale. I refer to exam
ples from ethnomusicology\, anthropology and education in\nwhich participa
tive horizontal research methodologies lead to a dynamic articulation of l
ocal conditions and allow for a reflection on how technology impacts on so
cial interaction and relationships with place.\nThe works of Samuel Araúj
o\, Georgina Born and Brazilian pedagogue Paulo Freire provide a framework
of reference in this context. \n\nThis is a joint session of the CRASSH '
 City Seminar' and 'Civic Matter'.
