I and Robotics - Dr Nick Hawes (University of Birmingham)

DESCRIPTION:The performance of autonomous robots\, i.e. robots that can ma
ke their own decisions and choose their own actions\, is becoming increasi
ngly impressive\, but most of them are still constrained to labs\, or cont
rolled environments. In addition to this\, these robots are typically only
able to do intelligent things for a short period of time\, before either
crashing (physically or digitally) or running out of things to do. In orde
r to go beyond these limitations\, and to deliver the kind of autonomous s
ervice robots required by society\, we must conquer the challenge of combi
ning artificial intelligence and robotics to develop systems capable of lo
ng-term autonomy in everyday environments. This talk will present an overv
iew of research in this direction\, focussing on the mobile robots for sec
urity and care domains developed by the EU-funded "STRANDS project":http:/
/strands-project.eu/.\n\nRead more about Nick on "his webpage":http://www.
cs.bham.ac.uk/~nah/.\n\nThis event is FREE to everyone.\n\nThe talk will b
e held at the "Plant Sciences Lecture Theatre on the Downing Site":http://
map.cam.ac.uk/Department+of+Plant+Sciences - someone from CUCaTS will be s
ituated at the Downing Street entrance to the site to help you find your w
ay.\n\nAttendees are invited to join us at the pub following the talk.
