DESCRIPTION:Quantum gravity is hard. So when we figure out how to compute
something in it\, we celebrate. This is such an occasion. In this talk\, I
'll describe a very concrete instanton-induced instability (computed with
David Tong) to the dynamics of d=4\, N=1 supergravity compactified on a ci
rcle. I will take time to explain how it arises by analogy with gauge theo
ries\, and give a general overview of the strategies required to tackle su
ch a problem\, in order to highlight points of conceptual interest like th
e non-cancellation of supersymmetric determinants\, and the existence of a
potential hidden IR scale in quantum gravity.
