DESCRIPTION:One of the projects to provide an alternative proof of the cla
 ssification of the finite simple groups intends to understand  those simpl
 e groups which have local\, or even parabolic\,  characteristic $p$. I'll 
 explain what these notions mean and then discuss recent results which can 
 be used in the final recognition of such groups. Along the way\, or rather
  towards the end\,  I'll explain how two of the configurations lead to a c
 onstruction of an infinite family of exotic fusion systems.\n
