SUMMARY:Nanomagnetism: from green computing to cancer therapy - Professor
Russell Cowburn (Cavendish Laboratory\, Cambridge University)
DTSTART:20141029T200000Z
DTEND:20141029T210000Z
UID:TALK55415@talks.cam.ac.uk
CONTACT:Nicolas Bricknell
DESCRIPTION:Professor Russell Cowburn gives a talk about what happens when
nanotechnology meets magnetism - see the abstract below for more details.
\n\nAdmission is free to CUPS members\, or £2 otherwise. As always\, wine
and cheese will be served after the talk.\n\n(Abstract:) Nanomagnets are
structures in which advanced nanotechnology techniques borrowed from the m
icroelectronics industry are applied to magnetic materials. Many magnetic
materials behave very differently when made small. In many cases these ne
w physical properties lead to useful new applications. In this talk I desc
ribe the underlying physics of what happens when nanotechnology meets magn
etism and show some examples of new technologies that are being developed\
, including ultralow energy computer chips and novel cancer therapies.
