DESCRIPTION:"Work in our laboratory is concerned with the role of the brai
n and particularly the autonomic nervous system\, in diabetes mellitus and
obesity. Early experiments on rabbits by Claude Bernard almost 150 years
ago have linked lesions in the dorsal vagal complex of the brainstem with
diabetes. Similarly\,\nmany diabetic patients present with autonomic imbal
ance\, and particularly a loss of vagal activity. We are using rodent mode
ls combined with pharmacogenetics\, and a combination of molecular\, optic
al\, immunocytochemical and electrophysiological techniques to elucidate t
he role of the autonomic\nnervous system in metabolic control in vitro and
  in vivo."\n\nSpeaker websites:\n\nhttp://iris.ucl.ac.uk/iris/browse/profi
