DESCRIPTION:The search for multiferroic materials\, where ferroelectricity
and\nmagnetism are coupled\, has a long history. Until recently it was\nb
elieved that these two orders rarely coexist and the interplay between\nth
em is weak. The breakthrough occurred with the discovery of frustrated\nma
gnets showing strong sensitivity of electric polarization and\ndielectric
constant to applied magnetic fields. In my talk I will focus\non the relat
ionship between magnetic frustration and ferroelectricity\,\nand discuss m
icroscopic mechanisms inducing electric polarization in\nmagnetically orde
red states as well as phenomenological description of\nspectacular effects
observed in frustrated magnets. I will also explore\nthe possibility to f
ind similar phenomena in thin ferromagnetic films\,\nwhere electric polari
zation can be induced by domain wall patterns.\n
