 rgetic vertical releases of fluid is opposed by a buoyancy force. They occ
 ur in the oceans and atmosphere\, and are utilised in the ventilation and 
 heating of buildings. Recent advances in the understanding of these founta
 ins will be discussed and details of fundamental scaling arguments present
 ed.
