DESCRIPTION:I will discuss some basic examples of non-linear wave equation
 s and the phenomena exhibited by them. Emphasis will be on developing intu
 ition\, as well as introducing some of the basic techniques that are commo
 nly employed to study them. In particular\, I will present a proof of shoc
 k formation for small data solutions of a quasi-linear wave equation in sp
 herical symmetry (a result originally due to Fritz John).
