DESCRIPTION:A borehole\, and the drillstring used to drill it\, are long a
nd thin\, and so at low frequencies their acoustic behaviour is well descr
ibed by one-dimensional equations. Despite the apparent simplicity of the
equations\, they exhibit a range of interesting behaviour\, such as acous
tic localization\, radiation tunnelling and resonances with strong mean fl
ow-rate dependence – all of which have practical implications.\n\nIn thi
s talk I shall describe some of the practicalities of deep drilling\, befo
re showing how these acoustic phenomena arise.
