DESCRIPTION:I formalise the trade-off between describing entities and even
ts within \nthe space constraints of a summary. Summarising ten 400-500 wo
rd news \nreports in 100 words involves heavy information compression. Imp
ortant \nevents need to be summarised\, while at the same time\, enough ba
ckground \ninformation needs to be provided about the protagonists to ensu
re that the \nreader can relate them to the story. I present a theory of h
ow much \ndescriptions can be compressed based on a theory of cognitive st
atus that \nclassifies references and referents as discourse new/discourse
  old\, hearer \nnew/hearer old and major character/minor character.\n\n(Jo
int work with Ani Nenkova and Kathleen McKeown)
