DESCRIPTION:Many fluids in industry and nature are non-Newtonian and many
show a yield stress\, viz. they behave as viscoelastic solids below some c
ritical stress or range of stresses. The prototypical yield stress liquid
is an aggregated network of colloidal particles - a colloidal gel. I will
use results from various sources to illustrate what is and\, more interest
ingly perhaps\, what is not known about the yield process in such fluids\,
with an emphasis on outstanding problems and challenges\, of which there
 are quite a few.
