DESCRIPTION:Scholars claim that in qualitative research\, the researcher i
s the main instrument. What does this mean for the preparation of research
ers? I suggest that the cultivation of the self is crucial\, going beyond
the acquisition of theories and the mastery of techniques. It has to do wi
th cultivation habits of mind.\n\nIn this presentation\, I suggest that en
gagement with the arts can support the development of intensified percepti
on\, seeing\, hearing and meaning making. I discuss the roles of dissonanc
e and consonance in the arts and qualitative research as forming connectio
ns between the inner and outer\, and generating insights in the quest to e
nhance understanding. Related concepts\, fundamental to the arts and highl
 y relevant to research\, include a three-pronged connection\; lingering ca
ress: and being shaped by one’s engagements and inquiry. The juxtapositi
on of intimate connection and detachment allows researchers to go beyond t
he traditional “objectivity” versus “subjectivity” dichotomies. I
will present some examples from my teaching as well as my own research in
arts education\, focusing on arts curriculum and arts integration.\n\n*Bi
