DESCRIPTION:Music teacher education is often the nexus of our hopes and dr
eams for the profession. How might our preservice programs encourage criti
cal and creative thinking towards an imaginative and socially just music c
urriculum? Now more than ever\, music educators are called to act as conse
rvators of musical traditions and cultural values while simultaneously ser
ving as catalysts for dynamic and contemporary musical practices. Critical
thinking\, the capacity to consider multiple and often conflicting claims
about the values of music education\, and to reflect with care on its mor
al and educational ends\, is crucial in the preparation of teachers. Creat
ive thinking is similarly urgent\, especially at a time when educational p
olicies appear to move toward narrower\, more standardized systems of scho
oling. Creative stances depend on teachers who are willing to risk uncert
ainty and who embrace continuous learning. Through teachers’ curricular
imagination\, we can address more liberatory\, equitable\, and fulfilling
musical ends.\n\n*Bio*\n\n*Janet Revell Barrett* is the Marilyn Pflederer
Zimmerman Endowed Scholar in Music Education at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests include the reconceptualizati
on of the music curriculum\, secondary general music\, interdisciplinary a
pproaches in music\, and music teacher education. Barrett has published w
idely in music education and is an author or editor of five books\, includ
ing the forthcoming Rethinking Education and the Musical Experience (Oxfor
d University Press). She serves as immediate past chair of the Society for
Music Teacher Education and editor for the Bulletin for the Council of Re
 search in Music Education.
