DESCRIPTION:We study the formality of the mapping torus of\nan orientation
 -preserving diffeomorphism of an oriented compact differentiable manifold.
  \nIn particular\, we give\nconditions under which a mapping torus\, not n
 ecessarily symplectic\,\nhas a non-zero Massey product. When the diffeomor
 phism\nsatisfies some extra conditions\, we determine \na minimal model of
  the mapping torus up to some degree p at least 2.\n\nWe apply this to pro
 ve that there are non-formal compact symplectic mapping tori\nof dimension
  m=2n+1 and with first Betti number b if and only if m=3 and b is at least
  2\, or m is at least 5 and b is at least 1.\nWe show explicit examples fo
 r each one of these cases.
