DESCRIPTION:Join the Zero Carbon Society for our second talk of the term\,
given by Dr. Jim Platts of the Engineering Department. \n\nThis talk is t
itled 'Making bamboo a high tech material for large wind turbine blades'.
Wind energy is becoming an increasingly important contribution to global e
nergy demands. In the UK\, it recently exceeded nuclear in its power gener
ation. In this talk\, Jim Platts will discuss the use of bamboo for wind t
urbines\, and how this is transforming the wind energy sector. Bamboo has
been used for 30 years in the production of some of the best performing wi
nd turbine blades in Europe - over 20\,000 large wind turbine blades\, usi
ng birch from Finland. More recent developments in China using bamboo exte
nd the potential of this naturally occurring and totally sustainable high
tech material for renewable energy generation. \n\nThe talk will be held a
 t 7pm on Wednesday 12th November\, in the William Thatcher Room\, Wilson C
ourt in Fitzwilliam College (a right turn out of the Porters' Lodge). We h
 ope to see you there!
