DESCRIPTION:Microorganisms living in the ocean can be subject to strong tu
rbulence\, with cell division times in the middle of a cascade of eddy tur
nover times. We explore the dynamics of a Fisher equation describing cel
l proliferation in one and two dimensions\, with cellular \ndiffusion as
well as a coupling to turbulent advection. Due to inertial effects and c
ell buoyancy\, we argue that the effective advecting velocity field is com
pressible. For strong enough compressible turbulence\, microorganisms su
ch as bacteria and phytoplankton track\, in a quasilocalized fashion\, sin
ks in the turbulent velocity field\, with important consequences for the c
arrying capacity and for fixation times when two genetically different spe
 cies compete\n\n
