DESCRIPTION:Surgical imaging describes the application of a range of imagi
ng\, vision and optical techniques to assist surgeons for intrasurgical de
cision making. In this talk I will describe how various biophotonics and o
ptical imaging approaches may be adapted for surgical endoscopic applicati
on\, including the use of multispectral imaging\, polarization resolved im
aging and fluorescence. Furthermore\, the integration of these approaches
with existing and new robotic platforms will be described\, allowing impro
ved ergonomics as well as better mechanical scanning of optical spectrosco
pic probes for more accurate optical diagnostics. A new approach for endos
copic structured lighting has also been developed for the detection of tis
sue surface curvatures during surgery. This work is driven by the need to
provide a higher degree of control and vision for the surgeon\, and to com
plement the standard white light reflection images.
