DESCRIPTION:The composition of the troposphere varies strongly both in spa
ce and in time\, especially when considering short-lived constituents such
as oxidants (e.g. hydroxyl radicals and ozone)\, ozone precursors (nitrog
en oxides\, carbon monoxide etc)\, and aerosols. Several aspects of this v
ariability are not well understood. In this talk\, previous and ongoing wo
rk that explores such aspects is going to be discussed. The primary focus
will be on interannual variations of the constituents mentioned above. The
role of possible drivers of variability is going to be discussed\, with a
 n emphasis on biomass burning\, meteorology\, and cloud-related effects. E
xamples of how satellite information can be used in conjunction with globa
l modelling to understand the variability of tropospheric constituents and
their radiative forcing are going to be demonstrated.
