SUMMARY:Long-term trends in ozone concentrations in the UK: local\, region
al and global influences - Dr Mike Jenkin

DESCRIPTION:Ozone (O3) is an important transboundary air pollut
ant that\, at elevated concentrations\, has adverse impacts on human healt
h and the natural environment. Its control has therefore been a major obje
ctive of international environmental policy for many decades. This presen
tation will make use of data from Defra’s automatic monitoring network t
o examine trends in O3 concentrations at UK sites since 1990\,
which will be used to illustrate the impacts of chemical processes occurri
ng on local\, regional and hemispheric scales. The data will be interprete
d by consideration of historical trends in the emissions of the precursor
nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and current un
derstanding of their detailed chemical processing.
