DESCRIPTION:All stylisticians make inferences. All audiences make inferenc
es. But not all\nwork in stylistics makes explicit reference to inferentia
l processes. This\npaper considers whether it is important for stylistic a
nalyses to include an\nexplicit discussion of the inferential processes in
volved in interpreting a\ntext. The claim is that an account of inferentia
l processes is essential in\nprinciple even if particular analyses do not
provide one in practice.\n\nThis view is illustrated by a discussion of Ha
 lliday’s (1971) analysis of\nGolding’s ‘The Inheritors’ from the p
oint of view of Relevance Theory. It is\nsuggested that an account of the
inferential processes involved here would have\nbeen another way of ‘get
ting off the Fish hook’ (Toolan 1990)\; in this case\,\nFish’s (1973)
concern that Halliday’s analysis involves ‘sleight of hand’ would\nb
e addressed by explicating the connection between linguistic features and\
ninterpretations. The aim is to demonstrate both what is added by an accou
nt of\ninferential processes and also what has to be assumed as implicitly
  given in\nunderstanding Halliday’s analysis.\n\n
