DESCRIPTION:Ionic liquids (ILs) are composed of molecular ions\, held toge
ther by a strong Coulomb potential. They have ultra-low vapour pressures a
t room temperature allowing them to be studied using ultra-high vacuum (UH
 V) surface science techniques. Here I will discuss the adsorption\, desorp
tion and reaction of ILs on solid surfaces. Our results indicate that the
IL is able to re-order on the surface. I will also discuss the development
of a technique called Variable Period X-ray Standing Wave (VPXSW) which c
an determine the position of atoms in thick layers of material on a reflec
 tive surface.
