SUMMARY:Nanoparticle growth and Ostwald ripening: aggregate growth\, size
distributions\, and the breakdown of scaling - Prof. Dr. Juergen Vollmer\,

DESCRIPTION:We strive to identify generic physical processes that provide
a unified point of view to nanoparticle growth and Ostwald ripening. To th
is end we have\nperformed comprehensive laboratory experiments and numeric
al studies addressing droplet growth and the evolution of droplet size dis
tributions in different fluids undergoing phase separation. We observe rem
arkable shortcomings of classical theories addressing the growth processes
. The origins of the discrepancies are identified\, and appropriate exten
sions of the theories are discussed.
