DESCRIPTION:Computer Scientists have been inspired by artists to develop m
any\nnon-photorealistic rendering techniques that can take an input image
and\nproduce a wide variety of artistic effects such as oil painting\,\nwa
tercolour\, pointillist\, etc. Their application can simply be for fun\n(e
.g. to make consumer photographs more interesting)\, but there are also\nm
any other applications such as scientific visualisation\, film\nproduction
effects\, technical illustration\, etc.\n\nMy talk will overview several
NPR techniques\, developed by myself and\nYu-Kun Lai\, that aim to generat
e results that are relatively minimal\nrendering\, in terms of using a com
bination of refined lines and regions\nand a small number of tones or colo
urs. The aim is to achieve a\nrendering that is abstracted but retains suf
ficient elements from the\noriginal image so that (for example) it can be
 used to generate\nrecognisable portraits.
