DESCRIPTION:As part of my on-going interest in the political economy of pu
 blic culture\, particularly\, the cinema\,  this paper will draw upon the 
 research carried out for my thesis on a history of the cinema in Lahore c.
  1919-1947.  The first part will explore the materialisation of the amorou
 s and the silent moving image from the last decade of the 19th century\, w
 hen cinema technology erupted across the globe.  The second part will disc
 uss the coming of sound to the moving image – and the silent image in th
 e age of ‘talkie’ films.\n
