DESCRIPTION:Selma James is the founder of Global Women's Strike\, whose ma
nifesto to 'invest in caring not killing' is the basis for an internationa
l grassroots movement to reduce investment in military budgets and organis
e payment for all forms of care work. Selma is also the author of several
influential books\, including The Power of Women and the Subversion of the
Community.\n\nFor those hoping to pursue a career in the 'Third Sector'\,
especially amidst a broad range of organisations and agencies whose manda
tes can be loosely collected under the umbrella headings of 'Human Rights
and Social Justice'\, 'Conflict and Security' or 'Development and Humanita
rian Aid\,' the terrain can be difficult to navigate. A sound academic tra
ining\, the kind provided by Cambridge University\, is important but certa
inly not enough to prepare students for the transition into working in thi
s sector. Through a mixture of substantive discussion\, personal reflectio
n and practical advice\, the CGHR Practitioner Series brings together high
‐level experts working in these fields and creates a forum in which stud
ents and researchers can listen and ask questions about what this work act
ually involves\, seek out reflections from experience on the dilemmas and
challenges faced\, and probe the skill set and experience needed to forge
a career in these fields.\n\nFor more information on Global Women's Strike
