DESCRIPTION:Freddie Carver has been the Head of Security and Justice Group
at the Stabilisation Unit since November 2012\, and has spent much of the
last decade working as a conflict and governance adviser for DFID and the
British Government. He has worked in the Former Soviet Union\, Latin Amer
ica and Asia\, but spent most time working on Sub-Saharan Africa. In parti
cular he has worked on international engagement in South Sudan and the Hor
n of Africa since 2003\, for both the British Government and Non-Governmen
tal Organisations.\n\nFor those hoping to pursue a career in the 'Third Se
ctor'\, especially amidst a broad range of organisations and agencies whos
e mandates can be loosely collected under the umbrella headings of 'Human
Rights and Social Justice'\, 'Conflict and Security' or 'Development and H
umanitarian Aid\,' the terrain can be difficult to navigate. A sound acade
mic training\, the kind provided by Cambridge University\, is important bu
t certainly not enough to prepare students for the transition into working
in this sector. Through a mixture of substantive discussion\, personal re
flection and practical advice\, the CGHR Practitioner Series brings togeth
er high‐level experts working in these fields and creates a forum in whi
ch students and researchers can listen and ask questions about what this w
ork actually involves\, seek out reflections from experience on the dilemm
as and challenges faced\, and probe the skill set and experience needed to
forge a career in these fields.\n\nMore about the CGHR Practitioner serie
