DESCRIPTION:Scholars of South Asian book history\, as Nile Green has argue
d\, have tended to privilege the study of texts\, readings and ideas over
materiality and technology. In the focus on 'print culture' questions of g
lobal technology transfer\, the circulation of material commodities and th
e economics of book production have often been overlooked. This talk explo
res the early decades of printing and publishing in Benares through the du
al lens of textuality and technology. In proposing an approach that integr
ates the local and the global\, accounting for both the specificity of pla
ce and the entangled history of technology\, the talk situates itself with
in recent scholarship that foregrounds the 'geography of the book'
