 nute lectures to celebrate the first 50 years of Wolfson College. In the s
 eries\, eleven distinguished members of the college reflect on development
 s in their fields of expertise in the half-century since Wolfson was found
 ed.\n\n_About the Lecturer_\n\nPeter Weissberg is a Fellow of Wolfson and 
 Medical Director of the British Heart Foundation.  He is also  Honorary Co
 nsultant Cardiologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital.  He graduated in Medicine
  from the University of Birmingham\, UK in 1976 and trained as a clinical 
 cardiologist before being appointed lecturer in Cardiovascular Medicine in
  the University of Birmingham. Following a two-year appointment as Medical
  Research Council Travelling Fellow to the Baker Medical Research Institut
 e and Alfred Hospital in Melbourne\, he was appointed to a British Heart F
 oundation Senior Research Fellowship at the University of Cambridge. In 19
 94 he was appointed as the first British Heart Foundation Professor of Car
 diovascular Medicine in the University of Cambridge.  His research interes
 ts have focused on vascular biology and\, in particular\, the cell and mol
 ecular biology of vascular smooth muscle cells in atherosclerosis. His gro
 up has developed clinical imaging techniques to characterise atherosclerot
 ic plaque composition in patients at risk of stroke. In 2004 he became Med
 ical Director of the British Heart Foundation\, which currently distribute
 s over £100m annually for cardiovascular research\, prevention and care i
 n the UK.\n\n_About the Lecture_\n\n50 years ago the UK\, like much of the
  western world\,  was in the grip of an epidemic of coronary heart disease
