SUMMARY:Fitness Meets Fitness: The Evolution and Genetics of Evolutionary
and Physical Fitness in Humans - Dr. Erik Postma (Institute of Evolutionar
y Biology and Environmental Studies\, University of Zurich)

DESCRIPTION:Humans are complex animals\, and being humans ourselves\, we a
re particular aware of these complexities. However\, at the same time we h
ave a level of insight into these complexities that is unattainable when l
ooking at other species than ourselves. In this talk\, Dr. Postma will inv
estigate the proximate and ultimate causes and consequences of variation i
n human evolutionary and physical fitness\, and how the two are entwined.
He will first focus on evolutionary fitness\, and how it is affected by in
breeding\, reproductive timing and dispersal. He will then switch to physi
cal fitness\, and test for sex-differences\, ageing and trade-offs. Finall
y\, Dr. Postma will provide some evidence that suggest there is a relation
ship between evolutionary and physical fitness\, and he will outline his p
 lans for the future.
