DESCRIPTION:Does your home network work\, the way you want it to\, every d
ay? Does\nyour parents'? Your neighbours'? Home networking has become mund
ane\nbut remains one of the most complex domestic technologies that people
\nhave to install and manage. Solving the associated problems requires\nan
interesting mix of human-computer interaction and\nsystems/networking: si
mply bolting fancy UIs onto existing\ninfrastructure isn't good enough.\n\
nIn the Homework project we started exploring this mix by explicitly\ncons
idering the users' needs rather than blindly reusing existing\ntechnology.
In this talk I will briefly describe some of the\nethnographic work we ca
 rried out\, and the impact this had on our\ntechnology design\, a Linux-ba
sed router using Open vSwitch and NOX. \nI will then discuss the particula
r capabilities we built and deployed as\na result: putting people into the
  protocols\, providing physically mediated access control\, reducing\ninte
raction overhead for secure wireless association\, and enabling\nusers to
implement network policies. I will finish by looking at some\nof the chall
enges that I believe we need to address to enable users to\ninteract with
 infrastructure effectively.
