DESCRIPTION:_Abstract:_ When one writes with a pencil\, thin flakes of gra
phite are left on the surface. Some of them are only one atom thick and ca
n be viewed as individual atomic planes extracted from bulk graphite. Unti
l two years ago\, this strictly 2D material called graphene was presumed n
ot to exist. I will discuss our work on graphene concentrating on its elec
tronic properties\, \nwhich are governed by relativistic quantum physics (
QED) rather than the standard physics based on the Schrödinger equation.\
