DESCRIPTION:I show why the existing formulation of supergravity cannot acc
 ommodate T-duality\, a basic symmetry of string theory. An effort to resol
 ve this issue leads to the introduction of so-called `exotic branes'. I di
 scuss how a similar issue arises in Double Field Theory\, a reformulation 
 of supergravity which is supposed to make T-duality manifest.
